Residents and Councillors call for new powers to tackle e-bike misuse

ebike conference

On Monday night RBKC committee chair, Cllr Greg Hammond, held a very well attended scrutiny panel at the Town Hall, giving residents a chance to put their concerns directly to operators.

Thanks to the Council's advocacy, Lime and Forest announced new initiatives during the panel to enhance e-bike parking technology. They pledged to improve GPS localisation by 82%, install Bluetooth beacons in designated parking bays to connect users with available spots more effectively, and launch a live photography system to verify proper parking before users can end their ride.

It is clear however that the wholly unregulated e-bike market cannot continue, and that tougher legislation to make e-bikes work for all residents is needed.

Please support us in calling for national legislation to enforce stricter guidelines for e-bike usage.

While RBKC is broadly supportive of e-bikes, as they provide a convenient travel option for residents and visitors, we need new powers from Government to make these well used bikes work for everyone. Examples of what we will be calling for are:

- Stricter controls on parking, bikes should not be parked blocking pavements.
- Ability to fine the operators for non-compliance.
- Repeat offenders to be banned from e-bike platforms.
- Ongoing payments from operators for use of parking bay access.
- More enforcement powers for local authorities to fine users who ride on pavements and jump red lights.

We are asking residents to help us by telling us what changes and regulations you would like to see. Please fill in our survey on e-bikes  below, and let us know how we can improve the current system for all.
